01. RESERCH

Research is the main stage on which any successful design project is built. However, it is usually the most complex and confusing stage of the entire design process, if research is presented in the process at all. Definition of the goal, decomposition into tasks, categorization, selection of research methods, analysis of results, integration into the product - many times I observed how these processes cause difficulties for designers of various levels.

02. UX research

Usability testing: participants try to complete tasks with the product while you watch. This allows you to determine how successful users are in completing a target action, how quickly they complete it, what problems they encounter, and how satisfied they are with the process.

A/B testing: Tests two versions of a product back-to-back to determine which one the target audience prefers. This can be done with an existing product, by showing different versions of the page to different visitors, or by sending two different versions of the newsletter to different recipient lists.

User Interviews: Face-to-face interviews (online or in person) offer a quick and easy way to get a sense of what a user wants from a potential product or to gather qualitative data about an existing product. When these interviews are conducted with several people at the same time, they are often called focus groups.

03. Design

Product design always involves a team. Even a small startup will typically have 5-6 people. A team typically includes a product manager, developers, and a product designer. In large projects, there may also be an analyst and a researcher, but most often the designer assumes their role.

Product designer:

Conducts audience research using surveys and interviews, collects and analyzes data on user behavior within the product.

Designs scenarios of user paths - makes diagrams of in which situations and how exactly people use the product: where they go, what they are looking for and what they are waiting for.

Creates design layouts of pages: determines the content and arrangement of elements and draws them in special programs such as Figma and Sketch.

Writes text for the interface: formulates a description for blocks and selects words for buttons.

A product designer is concerned with designing all components of a product from the point of view of user experience. Its task is to find and describe all possible scenarios of user interaction with the product. Such scenarios will be situations when a person wants to transfer money by phone number or when his card has been blocked. It is the product designer who thinks through how these scenarios will take place in the product interface and strives to make this experience as comfortable as possible.
